Tour Handicaps

Gentlemen,

I have an idea to share with you on which I would welcome your thoughts.

I was talking to a Burhill member yesterday who, like us, organises a regular annual golfing tour.  They have also been confronted with the issue of Tour Handicaps and first opted for a 2 stroke cut for the day winner, 1 for second etc. much as we did in the early JLC years.

This didn't work for the same reason as us: winner on first day unreasonably punished for playing well.

They have instead opted for a system of Jokers, which works as follows:
  • After each round, everyone's score is compared to the winner's
  • For every 3 points difference, all who didn't win are awarded a Joker up to a max of three (for example, if winning score is 34 and other players had 32, 31, 27 and 18, then these would be awarded 0, 1, 2 and 3 respectively)
  • These Jokers are only valid for the next day's play
  • A player in possession of a Joker may choose to use it on any hole, before teeing off, and his Stableford points on that hole will be doubled.
It is not easy to model how this would have worked this year, as you don't know who would have played which Joker when, but it is could have resulted in any one of Rolf, Adrian, Roland or Nigel winning.

Any thoughts anyone?
