Passing of an Age

For people of our (advanced) age, this is how we would wish to remember Seve.... firing balls off the tee seemingly in every direction and yet miraculously putting in for a birdie after a stupendous recovery from the car park, woods or wherever.

He really was an exciting player and so much more of a sporting hero than some of the metronomic robots currently playing on the Tour, many of whose names you cannot remember (Lucas Glover, DA Points, Johnson Wagner, Gary Woodland or Brendan Steele... all winners on this year's PGA Tour and none of whom you would recognise in the street...) and all of whom appear to have no personality to speak of.

It is presumably something to which we shall have to accustom ourselves, having to read the obituary of one of your contemporary heroes, but this doesn't make the reminder of our mortality any easier to accept.

Particularly if you, as I did, just had an awesome golfing weekend: 36 holes at St. George's Hill (with a splendid carvery lunch and lots of Pimms/red wine thrown in) on the Saturday and then a leisurely late afternoon four-ball at West Hill, a classic Surrey course with lots of character....

After that, going to work this week (a 5 day week, for heaven's sake!), is not going to be easy but we do have next weekend to look forward to:  in the diary are the following.  Friday evening, there is a Mixed Twilight at the Club (9 holes Greensomes, multi-tee start 1800-1830, followed by dinner) - these events are great fun and a super way to get to know new people at the club: sign-up sheet on the board outside the bar!  Saturday is the Iveagh Bowl qualifyer: normal competition with top 16 results going through to a knock-out final.  Sunday is our first round Flitch Salver match against Paul and Angela Richmond.
