Venturing Off-Piste...

Hi Roland,
If you want to venture off the beaten track of the usual chardonnays/sauvignon blancs/cabernet sauvignons/ merlots of this world, why no habe a look at the very fashionable Spanish albarino (from Rias Baixas). Legend has it, that it was brought to Galicia by a monk in the XI century from the banks of the river Rhine, which relates it to Riesling. The name also gives it away; combination of alba (white) and rin (Rhine).
Other very nice Spanish white grapes include the godello (from Valdeorras) and the verdejo (from Rueda). As to reds I would look into the tempranillos from Valle del Duero and Toro, which come highly acclaimed by his lordship, Sir Robert Parker.
Cheers,
Rolf
